The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig

This book had taken second place in the last few meeting when voting on books, but it finally made it!

Myself and others weren't prepared for some of the emotion this book would bring up. It was a great read and overall would be a great pick for another bookclub.

  • Nora's day to day gloom gives a good, quick glimpse of her life even though we don't know it.

  • The Library rules seem to be told as they go, and evolve as Nora does.

  • The first couple lives that are drastically different are eye opening as they have their own hardships and then other things that have stayed the same.

  • As Nora begins to have stories that are less drastic, it's almost more interesting to see what really changes and what stays the same.

  • Finding other people "in their own library" is fun, but we wish she also would've had some she stumbled across on her own.

  • What Nora learns about herself and her choices... have some tissues and a mood booster for yourself!

  • We felt a little left hanging on some of the ending, but we won't spoil it.

This book overall was eye opening for me and how I've thought about life. Trying to assess my big choices and paths taken, and how that's played out for me and others - and this books tipped some of what I always believed about how we make those choices on end.

Synopsis: Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?
