Big Little Lies, by Liane Moriarty

  • Fast paced

  • Twists and turns, unexpected ending

  • Amazing voices and POVs

  • 5 Stars

I’m late to the finish line with this one. Thank you SO MUCH to Lions on Leashes host, Marissa, for not only recommending but gifting me a copy after our episode! (Check out my Lions on Leashes Episode 20 Here.)

This book was fast paced. I finished the first three chapters before I knew what happened, and I just kept going. The voices and narrative sucked me in right away. The opening scenes of traffic, breaking a heel, first day of school, a new friend - boom. So much to unload and get lost in from the beginning.

The more I read, the more I thought I knew. Turns out, I knew nothing! No spoilers in this review, but as someone who has guessed endings correctly many times - this one got me!

It was amazingly written, can’t stress that enough.

The interviews that end each chapter were endearing, comical, confusing, and suspenseful - sometimes all at once. I think they were one of my favorite pieces of the writing overall. To capture the reader with lines from characters you don’t fully know, without context, without a setting - and to look for more of it at the end of each section. Well. Done.

I think this is a great choice of summer read (for those who haven’t read it yet). The drama is entertaining, easy to fall into, and the ending will have you both shocked and pumped up. Enjoy by the pool, on the plane, unwinding at night, and everywhere in between.

My Synopsis: An altercation in traffic, and then an altercation at the first day of kindergarten set in motion a series of small, wild, tragic events that amount to more than anyone could’ve seen coming. Each mother takes you into her POV and begins to unpack the secrets, the miscommunications, and the heartache over the course of the school year. Who was murdered, by who, for what, and why is everyone so drunk at trivia?
