The title drew me to this book - I loved the 90’s film with the same title - and it was in a used bookstore, calling to me.
I read this in about two days, I couldn’t put it down. I found myself wrapped around Sylvie and Diana’s fingers as their stories unfolded. I felt them being torn in two with all of their decisions while trying to do what was best for themselves.
There was one chapter, when Sylvie is at their vacation home and goes grocery shopping, that had me on my side on the couch in emotions. She isn’t sure what to do after learning of her husbands affair, and being out on her own not having to worry for anyone but herself - for the first time in a long time. She’s in the grocery store, and grabbing any and everything she wants to eat for the next week. I, for one, have done this post-break up.
I have watched my apartment lose half of it’s belongings, and then felt like I should restock in the only way that’s important: food. And… dog toys. I have rolled out of the market with making for mac and cheese, fresh cut fruit, eggs and brunch items, alcohol, and some fancy olives and cheese. Prepared to spend a weekend day Eat, Pray, Love-ing in my own kitchen and yard. This scene reminded me that through books we’re never alone. Even when we are in fact, alone.
I think that this would be a perfect beach read, or vacation read wherever you end up relaxing. Easy to fall into and follow, tugging at heart string but also some witty family banter. I love this book.
My Synopsis: Sylvie learns via a rest stop TV that her husband, a senator, has been having an affair. Diana wants to end her own affair but isn’t happy with her husband, and doesn’t know if she ever was. Lizzie is doing her best but has some news that may just tilt the family the rest of the way off the ledge. As they all come home for the holidays, they learn what’s important and remember the love they share.
