In Polite Company, by Gervais Hagerty

  • Relatable main character

  • Beautiful, history meets modern day Charleston

  • Awesome debut novel

  • 4 stars

This book was an excellent escape for me in the last few weeks of summer while traveling for work.

I love books set in Charleston, near the beach in the little towns and villages that time has only sort of touched but taken over at the same time. To me, that's how we all feel - time time is simply passing yet changing us drastically all the time.

Simons was an incredibly relatable and understandable character for me. The many story line for her with job, relationships, family, personal time and where to go with any one of those next - I feel like that's a lot of young women today. I felt the frustration and heartbreak with her every step of the way.

This is Hagerty's debut novel, and I felt like it has Elin Hildrebrand and Jenny Han vibes. The writing had just enough description to fall into the setting and characters, but I enjoyed the detail of Simon's emotions and reactions as we followed her. Recommend for the next vacation day read!
