The Girls From Widow Hills, by Megan Miranda

  • Dark and mysterious

  • Dramatic twist ending

  • A back story that it still playing out

  • 4 stars

This was a random find at the airport when I found myself short on something to read (Gasp, the worst!). I finished in one 5 hour plane ride, and I couldn't even consider putting it down to nap. If you enjoyed Gone Girl, The Woman in the Window, and maybe some Riverdale series I would recommend checking this one out.

The back story along is enough of a mystery to keep you turning the pages. But the back story is just that, because there is unfolding drama and mystery in Olivia's new small town life that will also have you guessing.

A somewhat typical setting - a long road and driveway, a house hidden away with a weird land lord, as a young woman tries to outrun her past. You can feel that there is a dark twist about to happen from the beginning. So, as character start to appear and reveal more of themselves it comes down to who. Who now and who back then.

Olivia's need to figure it out is only paralleled by her wish to hide from it all. And that comes across as such a relatable feeling in the book.

This would pair will with a plane ride, a rainy day stuck inside, or maybe a thrilling beach read. The cast of characters may also make a good book club discussion too.

Synopsis: Everyone knows the story of "the girl from Widow Hills."

Arden Maynor was just a child when she was swept away while sleepwalking during a terrifying rainstorm and went missing for days. Against all odds, she was found, alive, clinging to a storm drain. The girl from Widow Hills was a living miracle. Arden's mother wrote a book. Fame followed. Fans and fan letters, creeps, and stalkers. It all became too much. As soon as she was old enough, Arden changed her name and disappeared from the public eye.

Now a young woman living hundreds of miles away, Arden goes by Olivia. She's managed to stay off the radar for the last few years. But with the twentieth anniversary of her rescue approaching, the media will inevitably renew its interest in Arden. Where is she now? Soon Olivia feels like she's being watched and begins sleepwalking again, like she did long ago, even waking up outside her home. Until late one night, she jolts awake in her yard. At her feet is the corpse of a man she knows--from her previous life, as Arden Maynor.
