The Guncle, by Steven Rowley

  • Heartwarming and charming in every way

  • The perfect thoughtful yet lighthearted read

  • Moment of true LOL writing

  • 5 Stars

I don't know where to start in describing how great this book was for me. It is going to be another one that is a go to on the gift list for others. If you think the cover is cute, wait until you read it!

GUP/Guncle, their Gay Uncle Patrick, takes in his brother's kids for a summer after a tragedy in the family. Simple enough, if he wasn't in his 40's, single, living on the outskirts of LA and have built a life style that doesn't fit with children at all.

I can honestly say I laughed out loud at this book a few times. Patrick has a big personality and sense of humor that grace almost every page. His outbursts, sarcastic comments, and overall view of the world are truly a treat in this novel. He has a pessimistic side, coming out of Hollywood fame, and it builds his character into a comedy fit for TV (no pun intended).

Patrick also come up with "Guncle Rules" and I hope to reread one day and write them all down for myself. Both funny, meaningful, heartfelt, and truly applicable to life... they were a great part of the book for me.

I have been trying to list out similar and "if you like this than try that" lists for books, but this one is stumping me. It's a relatable, yet unique story of heartfelt humor. I would, oddly, say the only thing that came to mind was the comparison to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The sarcasm, humor, big life decisions, the serious life lessons, and they all get tied together with an awesome male lead.

I hope everyone can take time to enjoy this book. It pairs well with a sunny day, a vacation reading nook, a cold drink and a smile! Also consider it if you need out of a reading slump!

My Synopsis: Patrick has been doing a great job of isolating himself in a post-Hollywood lifestyle that revolves around only himself. After a death and arising problems in his family, he makes the choices to take in his niece and nephew for the summer to help out. This new routine couldn't be more different and the challenges couldn't have a funnier spin to them with all of his "Gungle Rules." In trying to make sure to support and raise the kids right, he unfolds a lot about himself and who he wants to be.
