The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune

  • Captivating plot and characters

  • Cute, quirky, well described scenes

  • Unique twist on fantasy meets contemporary fiction

  • 5 stars!

This is a new title in my Top Ten. WOW. This is a book that not only lived up to the hype but surpassed it. A lot of my circle will be getting this one as gifts!

I was on the beach on vacation when I started and finished it, in nearly one day. I couldn't put it down and was so hyper vigilant about not getting it wet when I need to cool off (yet I brought it to the water, I was obsessed!!).

If you're a fan of:

Umbrella Academy (TV Show)

Nanny McPhee (Movie)

Series of Unfortunate Events (Book, Movie)

...you may like this book!

I'm not a huge fan of fantasy or sci-fi type books, and this was labeled "fantasy" in a lot of the hype I found. So if you also don't gravitate to fantasy, hear me when I say this one is different and so worth your time! An amazingly endearing twist and combo of fantasy, contemporary fiction and romance.

My Synopsis:

Linus is a case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, an agency that looks after the unique children and the orphanages set up to care for them and keep them from being a public annoyance. When he's asked to take a special case and site visit to an orphanage that is under special investigation he's very worried.

Upon arriving he realizes he's in over his head and is concerned about his month long observance of the house and those in it. Some of the most dangerous magical youth and the most problematic house master are keeping him on his toes.

The orphans are beyond endearing, as is the house master. Each of these characters will start to steal your heart and make you want to live in the house on the cerulean sea.
